About the North Shore

The North Shore is considered one of the most desirable areas to live in Sydney.

The North Shore is traditionally split into two regions – the Lower North Shore and the Upper North Shore. The Lower North Shore starts immediately to the north of Sydney Harbour and is bounded by the Lane Cove River to the west and Middle Harbour to the east. Chatswood is regarded to be the most northerly suburb. The Upper North Shore stretches to the north of Chatswood up to Hornsby.

The area is well known for large family houses, gardens and parkland and is often referred to as the “leafy North Shore”. The North Shore features quality schools, numerous shopping options, parks, sporting clubs and other amenities.

A wide range of housing styles are evident on the North Shore. Federation and Californian bungalows, modern architecturally designed homes, semi detached houses and townhouses are common. Apartments range from small art deco apartment blocks through to large high rise buildings.

Domain’s Liveability Sydney Study was last undertaken in 2019. It ranks suburbs based on 19 desirability factors such as access to employment, transport, congestion, education and lifestyle factors. This time of the Top 20, 11 were North Shore suburbs. See details here.
